Sherry Dustman, O.D.

Dr. Sherry Dustman

Wilkinson Eye Center is pleased to announce the return of Dr. Sherry Dustman.

Dr. Dustman grew up in Michigan. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry after completing her Bachelors of Science degree from Michigan State University.

Dr. Dustman has been involved in VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity). This included a mission trip to Thailand where she helped serve hundreds of people with their eye care needs.

Her experiences have drawn her to specialty contact lens fits, scleral and multifocal contact lens fits, keratoconus, and post-surgical care. We are excited to have Dr. Dustman involved in our expanded care of chronic dry eyes.

Dr. Dustman is an ABO Certified Diplomat. She is a caring professional dedicated to providing the highest level of healthcare.

She will be seeing patients in both our Pontiac and Clarkston offices.

W. Scott Wilkinson, M.D.

wilkinsonDr. W. Scott Wilkinson is a third generation Ophthalmologist in one of the oldest medical practices in the State of Michigan. He began private practice in 1989. Dr. Wilkinson is board certified in ophthalmology.

Dr. Wilkinson received his BA in biology from Albion College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan.

He went on to complete a fellowship in corneal surgery and external diseases of the eye at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University. He received the Slocum Award at the University of Michigan in 1989 for research in glaucoma.

Dr. Wilkinson has been a contributing member to a number of presentations and publications in leading medical journals. He is a Past President of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is a past Chair of the Division of Ophthalmology at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was honored in 2009 as the Distinguished Alumni for the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan. Dr. Wilkinson is a member of the following professional societies:

Dr. Wilkinson performs surgery at TruVista Surgery Center in Troy and Michigan Outpatient Surgery Center in Fraser. In addition to specializing in cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation, corneal transplantation and treatment of glaucoma, Dr. Wilkinson also offers the newest multi-focal cataract lens implant. He performs refractive surgery, including LASIK and PRK for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Cagri G. Besirli, M.D.

bersirliDr. Besirli (pronounced “CHA-ra Buh-SEER-li”) joined the physician staff in 2013. He practices ophthalmology and teaches at the renowned University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor and joins Wilkinson Eye Center weekly in our Pontiac location as our Retina Specialist. Dr. Besirli is board certified in ophthalmology.

He received his medical and graduate degrees from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006. He has completed his residency in ophthalmology at the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan in 2010, where he also completed fellowships in retina and uveitis in 2012. He also completed a fellowship in Pediatric Vitreoretinal Diseases with Associated Retinal Consultants, Royal Oak, Michigan.

Dr. Besirli’s research focus at Kellogg is in molecular mechanisms of photoreceptor cell death and survival during periods of retinal stress. He is a contributing member to numerous publications and medical journals. His specialty interests include but are not limited to:

  • Disease and surgery of the retina and vitreous, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, ocular trauma, ocular inflammation, macular and submacular surgery, and surgical management of complex retinal detachment
  • Medical and surgical management of acquired and inherited pediatric retinal disorders, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), Coats’ disease, retinal detachment, and ocular trauma

Dr. Besirli is a member of the:

  • American Academy of Ophthalmology
  • American Society of Retinal Specialists
  • Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons

Dr. Besirli continues our collaboration with the University of Michigan, with the excellent retina services we have come to rely on at Wilkinson Eye Center.

Amy L. Smith, M.D.

smithDr. Amy Smith joined the physician staff in July 2011. Originally from the Toledo, OH area, Dr. Smith came to Michigan for schooling at the University of Michigan. She is a third-generation alumni.   Dr. Smith received her BA in biology, Teacher Certification and pharmaceutical degree from the University of Michigan. She received her medical degree from Wayne State University. She completed a residency in ophthalmology at the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan. She served her internship at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI. She went on to complete her residency at the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan . Dr. Smith is board certified in ophthalmology. Dr. Smith has been a contributing member to a number of presentations, publications and research projects. She is a member of the following professional societies:

  • American Academy of Ophthalmology
  • Michigan State Medical Society
  • Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons
  • American Medical Society
  • Women in Ophthalmology
  • Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Association

In her free time Dr. Smith enjoys sailboat racing, water skiing, golf, travel, photography and needlepoint.

John M. Schmitz, O.D.

johnDr. John Schmitz joined the Wilkinson Eye Center in March 2010. He brings a wealth of professional experience from his own private practice and work in a master optician’s office.

Dr. Schmitz received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in 1980. He received post graduate training in visual integrating processing in Sacramento, California in 1992.

He performs eye examinations for glasses and specializes in contact lens fittings, including bifocals, keratoconus and post-surgical fits. Dr. Schmitz also enjoys working with children of all ages.

Dr. Schmitz holds the following certifications:
