Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK can transform the life of someone who struggles with their vision, has trouble wearing contacts, or really doesn’t like wearing glasses. Imagine the joy of waking up and being able to see what time it is without having to fumble around to find your glasses first. But is LASIK right for everyone?

LASIK Eye Surgery at Wilkinson Eye Center

At Wilkinson Eye Center, we approach LASIK differently than some LASIK centers. We don’t offer “two eyes for the price of one” specials, and we don’t rush the process. LASIK is still a serious procedure, and while it’s beneficial for most people, we believe it’s best to take our time and make sure you understand everything about it and your expected outcome before we schedule your procedure with Dr. Wilkinson.

Evaluating LASIK

The first step in determining if LASIK is right for you is to schedule a free screening. During the screening, Dr. Wilkinson will assess your eyes based on a set of criteria. If you meet that criteria, he’ll advance you to the next step – but if you don’t, he’ll be honest with you and discuss other alternatives for improving your eyesight.

Is LASIK Safe?

The quick answer is yes. LASIK is a safe procedure that has been in existence for more than 20 years on almost 20 million patients. Recent studies have demonstrated that LASIK is far better for the eyes than contacts, resulting in approximately one third the number of infections as contacts. We encourage you to do some research about LASIK to determine if it’s right for you. You can ask all of your questions during your consultation.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

The actual procedure is done as an outpatient. Within 24 hours, most patients fully recover their vision, though you will not be able to wear contacts for about a month. Most patients describe the post-LASIK experience that first day as feeling like they have sand or a hair in their eye. It passes quickly.
