If you live in a house filled with young children and animals–especially dogs— you are more susceptible to one of your children or even yourself getting pink eye. As one of the most contagious eye infections out there, the spread of pink eye can quickly take over your entire household. If you suspect that you or one of your children have caught pink eye, follow the following protocol.
Wash Your Hands
Because pink eye is so contagious, it’s important to make sure that everyone in your family— not just the infected individual— are washing their hands religiously. And make sure that everyone is avoiding touching their faces or anywhere around their eyes. By ridding your hands of the bacteria that causes pink eye, you can help to decrease the chance that it will spread.
Although pink eye will often subside on its own, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible in order to get either yourself or your child feeling back to normal again. Additionally, your eye doctor will be able to determine if your pink eye is bacteria, viral, or simply caused by allergies. Once your doctor is able to give you a decent eye exam, they will be able to provide you with some prescription eye drops to help clear up the pink eye almost right away. This will also help to prevent the further spread of it around your house.
Wash Sheets and Linens
Sleeping on the same bacteria filled pillowcase every night can only cause you severe problems— like pink eye. As one of the first steps you should take when discovering that either yourself or your child has pink eye is to wash all of your sheets and linens in hot water. Because bacteria can easily spread across sheets and towels, it’s important to have them cleaned as soon as possible so that they won’t harbor any more bacteria.
If you or a loved one has pink eye, don’t freak out: it’s not the end of the world. However, due to its extremely contagious nature, it’s important to follow the above steps in order to prevent anybody else in your house from getting it.
