How to effectively combat dry eye

Fatigued teen girl taking off glasses take break to relieve dry irritable eyesDry eye is a common problem that can be caused by a number of different factors. The good news is that there are many ways to combat dry eyes and keep your eyes healthy and comfortable. At Wilkinson Eye Center, we help patients with this and many other vision concerns. With a proper diagnosis, patients can work with our providers to learn how to manage it.

Below are just a few of the suggestions we may make to alleviate the discomfort of dry eye:

  • Stay hydrated. One of the best ways to combat dry eye is to ensure you are drinking enough water. Water helps to keep the eyes hydrated and prevents them from becoming dry and irritated. Make sure to drink eight glasses of water each day, and if you are working or spending time outside in the sun, drink even more water to stay hydrated.
  • Use over-the-counter or prescription eye drops for lubrication. Another way to combat dry eyes is to use artificial tears or lubricating drops. These can help to soothe the eyes and prevent them from drying out. If you use artificial tears or lubricating drops, make sure to follow the directions on the package carefully.
  • Keep moisture in the air within the rooms you spend the most time. You can also try using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air. This can help to prevent the eyes from drying out.
  • Avoid or properly care for contact lenses. Finally, if you wear contact lenses, make sure to clean them regularly and replace them as often as directed by your eye care provider. Contact lenses can sometimes irritate the eyes and cause dryness.
