It’s normal to have dry eye on occasion but if you suffer from dry eye on a regular basis, then it’s probably a little more serious. Your eyes are naturally lubricated by your tears which contain mucin (a mucus-like substance) and lipids/oils. Each of these substances come from a different structure of the eye to help keep it moisturized. When one of these structures stops working, dry eye can occur— especially if it happens to the Meibomian glands where lipids are formed.
Typically when patients suffer from dry eye, we recommend that they use over-the-counter moisturizing eye drops, prescription strength eye drops, or oral medication. If none of those options are doing the job, however, we may recommend LipiFlow.
What Is LipiFlow?
LipiFlow uses Thermal Pulsation to help clear blockages in the Meibomian glands. The Thermal Pulsation works by gently heating the inner eyelid while also releasing pulses of pressure which helps loosen debris from the glands and help restore the function of the Meibomian glands.
How Long Does It Take?
One of the unique things about LipiFlow is that it’s fast and can be done as an in-office procedure. In fact, LipiFlow is so fast that it can be done in about twelve minutes on average.
What’s Recovery Like?
Another unique component of LipiFlow is that there are no side effects or recovery time involved. In fact, patients can go right back to work or even the gym directly after the procedure without having to worry about their eye healing.
Is It Worth it?
If having dry eyes is driving you nuts and medications and eye drops aren’t doing anything, then yes, LipiFlow is absolutely worth it. During your initial consultation we will help you determine whether or not you will have success with this treatment.
