More Eyeglass Lens Options for Your New Eyeglasses

In July’s first blog we delved into some of the new lens options available to put in all of the great designer eyeglass frames we offer in our optical shops in our Pontiac and Clarkston locations. Truth is, there’s so much cool technology in our lenses these days we need a second blog to cover it all.

So, without further ado…

  •     Transition Lenses/Light Reactive Variable Tint Lenses — Do you bop in and back outdoors many times every day? Are you constantly having to take off your clear glasses and don your sunglasses? Well, there’s a better way to handle the rays: Light Reactive Lenses or Variable Tint Lenses. These cool lenses automatically adjust to your changing light environment, continually providing you with the optimal amount of lens tint. When inside, the lenses are clear, similar to standard eyeglass lenses. But as soon as you head out the door, these lenses react to ultraviolet light, automatically darkening, transforming them into sunglasses. Voila! Our transition lenses are also scratch resistant and provide UV protection.
  •     Anti-Glare Lenses — Standard eyeglass lenses can reflect up to 19 percent of light, causing glare and eye strain. This type of glare can come from florescent lighting, computer screens, and headlights. With anti-glare less treatment, only 1 percent of light is reflected off the surface of the lens, with 99 percent passing through to your eyes. This dramatically reduces any glare and eye strain, and it allows you to see much more clearly. Anti-glare lenses make night driving safer, as they eliminate glare from oncoming headlights and streetlights. Anti-glare treatment also eliminates light reflecting back off the surface of your lenses, which can be distracting when others look at you or are talking with you. Finally, anti-glare treatment enhances the scratch-resistant properties of standard scratch-resistant lenses, helping them repel water, fingerprints, oil, and dust.
  •     Polarized Sunglasses — Most over-the-counter sunglasses are ineffective at reducing blinding glare by light-reflecting surfaces such as water, ice, and snow. Polarized lenses are very effective in eliminating this. They provide increased clarity, contrast, and depth perception. Research has shown that polarized lenses give wearers an additional 23 feet of stopping distance when driving compared to ordinary sunglasses. Our polarized sunglasses block both UVA and UVB rays, include scratch protection, and are available in a wide assortment of colors and styles.
  •     Digital Lenses/High-Definition Lenses — The manufacturing processes used to make today’s conventional lenses were invented in the early 20th century. While still effective, this method isn’t ideal for all lens prescriptions or frame designs. Conventional lenses provide the best clarity in the optical center of the lens. As you move outward, the optical performance deteriorates. With high refractive correction and progressive lenses, the effect is even more noticeable. This reduction in clarity is caused when light rays from the lateral surfaces of the lens are bent in such a way that they focus slightly in front of the retina instead of directly on it. New technology called digital free-form lens manufacturing allows the creation of customized High-Definition Lenses. The back of each lens re-directs light rays from every direction of sight to focus directly on the retina. This optimizes all viewing zones, giving you clearer vision throughout your entire lens. High-Definition Lenses are six times more accurate than conventional lenses.

Don’t your eyes deserve a new pair of glasses after this past year of COVID madness? From July’s two blogs, you can see you have lots of options at our Wilkinson Eye Center optical shops. Stop in our Pontiac or Clarkston locations and check out our selection of frames and we can talk about the lenses you want to put in them. Or, if you need to make an appointment, give us a call at (248) 334-4931.
