Eye exams, cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, dry eye treatment, and anything else to do with the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision.

But how about the appearance of your eyelids? Well, we can help you with that, as well. Blepharoplasty is the clinical term for eyelid surgery, and it’s one of the cosmetic oculoplastic services we offer at Wilkinson Eye Center.

Dr. Wilkinson is our board-certified ophthalmologist who handles our cosmetic eyelid surgeries. For September let’s make both of our blogs about rejuvenating your sagging, aging eyelids with Dr. Wilkinson at Wilkinson Eye Center.

Why the eyes age so much

Our eyes are surrounded by some of the thinnest skin on the entire human body. And it is exposed to the sun and the elements all the time. Think about that. Thin skin that never gets to hide behind clothing. It’s no secret why your eyes can show your age, and maybe then some.

Over time, not only do the eyelids stretch, but the muscles supporting them also weaken. Plus, while you don’t think about it, fat often gathers above and below the eye. The result of all of this is puffy, droopy upper eyelids, and bags under the eyes.

Upper blepharoplasty

In the upper eyelid, the goal is to remove excess skin and fat around the upper eyelid. The muscles are usually tightened, too. This procedure on the upper lids can improve vision and reduce the headaches caused by trying to see around sagging skin.

Lower blepharoplasty

In the lower eyelid, the goal is to reduce wrinkles and improve the contour of the eyelid by removing excess skin and fat. The muscles may be tightened to correct drooping and sagging.

The procedure

Dr. Wilkinson makes an incision along the fold of the upper eyelid. This hides the incision in the eyelid crease. In the lower eyelid, the incision may be made just below the eyelash or inside the lower eyelid. He is especially careful about removing fat from the lower eyelid to avoid the patient acquiring a hollow appearance.

Recovery from eyelid surgery is not difficult. We’ll get into that in September’s second blog.

Eyelid surgery with Dr. Wilkinson at Wilkinson Eye Center is a very satisfying procedure. It takes a decade or more off your facial age yet is a very subtle change. Call us at (248) 334-4931 to schedule a consultation.
